FAQs

What is McTimoney Chiropractic?

McTimoney Chiropractors focus on the spine and the neuro-musculoskeletal system and how conditions affecting these areas can affect your health and performance.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

You do not need a referral from your doctor to visit a chiropractor. We will liaise with your GP (With your permission) and to let them know you are receiving chiropractic treatment and where necessary refer you back to them for further investigations if they are needed.

How long is a treatment?

Your initial consultation will take around 45 minutes, all follow on treatments are 30 minutes long.

Is it safe for people of all ages?

Yes the gentle effective treatment is suitable for all ages from the young through to the elderly.

Is my chiropractor qualified?

Yes all chiropractors are governed by the General Chiropractic Council and each must have a registration number to be able to practice.

Will I need to get undressed?

For your first visit you will be required to undress down to your underwear due to the neurological tests. However if you are uncomfortable with this then you may wear shorts and a strappy top/vest. For follow up treatments tracksuit bottoms and tee-shirt are fine.

Will it hurt?

The highly dexterous and light adjustments of the McTimoney treatment means that it is gentle and rarely painful. However, after treatment you may feel physical changes in your body, these may include a brief period of stiffness or tiredness, but more often than not patients report a feeling of wellbeing and relief from stress and pain.

Is it safe?

Chiropractic treatment is very safe. Prior to any treatment we will take a full medical history from you to ensure that there are no reasons why you should not receive treatment. If your chiropractor suspects a problem, which requires further investigation, we will refer you to your GP before giving you any treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

Most people will need between two and six treatments, initially at weekly intervals then gradually spaced out as the condition improves, by which time a noticeable change should have occurred. It may all depend on:

A. Your age – you generally heal more slowly as you get older
B. The nature of your problem
C. How long you have had the problem – normally yesterdays injury may resolve more quickly than one that has been troubling you for the last 10 years.

Will I get advice to make sure the problem does not recur?

Yes. You will receive postural advice after the treatment to help your body get the most benefit from the adjustments you have received, and to raise your awareness of simple things that you may doing every day which may be exacerbating your problem. You may also be given some basic exercises or stretches to do if we feel that would be beneficial.
